something I tend to do ALOT
I was reading some of teegs' blog and I caught one about RSJ - how when you don't hear a song/album for a while that you really liked it's like catching up with an old friend - I feel exactly the same way - and the weirdest thing was that as I was reading that I was listening to a local radio station and I heard once such song - Boys 2 Men and Mariah Carrey - One Sweet Day.
What IS it about songs and movies from your childhood that bring about such powerful memories. I don't know about you but I can almost associate every song and movie I ever hear with at least one external memory and then once you think about that one memory you don't only get transported back to that time and place but you move on to the next day and the next and pretty soon you've just spent and hour reminscing about a whole chapter of your life either just by yourself or with someone else. People who actually know me would tell you I'm notorious for remembering everything - not just the things that are important but everything from dates to things people said at the exact time and place they were said and done. And one particularly friend of mine would say that anytime I got together with Rin or Tegan at some stage the conversation would inevitabely turn to "remember when"
Now you may be thinking how can someone who's only 20 have some much to remember. Well I'll tell you - Schoolies 2000
After year 12 Australian teenagers are set loose on the rest of the world and the general consensus is to go to the Gold or Sunshine Coast. (Most QLDer's are actually 17 and therefore underage when they finish highschool all the other Australian states have an extra year before grade 1 called prep so they finish when they're 18)
Being Christians my 3 girlfriends and I opted to NOT go with the pack and we went on a Camp - sounds pretty square right - Well it was THE best week of our lives to date (then - we might have had better weeks since...)
We were not only on natural highs from finishing school and being out in the real world but we had lots of fun activities planned and we met heaps of really cool people too - a group of 5 boys included who've become Life - Long Friends (at least for me being married to the best friend of one of them)
um...where was i? I got distracted by the pretenders song on the radio.......
OH - I was talking about schoolies - well it was a memorable week and it generates alot of links to other memories mainly because we liked the "BBC" boys so much we had to find ways to get together with them - then over the years the groups expanded we let others in - and people left got married had babies - which usually perpetuated the viscious cycle of "remember whens"
See we found it SO weird that we had friends who were having babies before we were 19 that we had to just keep talking about it and mostly about the before baby stuff. And now that I've joined the ranks of teenage married mothers the "remember whens" are about "pre-elana days"
Actually ... no never mind I think I hear stirrings coming from the nursary - until next time
