Breaking News - Australia's new MP

Former front man of that fantastic Australian rock band Midnight Oil - Peter Garrett has just held a press conference in Sydney to announce he WILL be running for the safe Labour seat in Kingsford Smith.
Garrett along with Opposition Leader (and PM to be IMO) Mark Latham held a press conference not 10 minutes ago that interupted Channel 7's coverage of Ronald Reagan's funeral.

In it he addressed why he was running, his long standing commitment to the environment and the fact that he HAS voted in at least the last 2 elections and he wasn't aware that he wasn't on the electoral roll but he is now and he insteads to stay on it. And that one of Midnight Oil's first concerts was in Kingsford "just down the road here"

I grew up listening to MIdnight Oil - Beds are Burning, Blue Sky Mine and my dad's favourite US Forces. I was completely unaware he was a politician and I think it's great he's running for a Labour seat - I wish I could vote for him.

But I find myself wondering -- Peter Garrett wasn't a movie star he was/is a musician - I wonder if like when Arnie ran for Governor they couldn't play any of his movies while he was campaigning --

Are they allowed to play Midnight Oil on the radio while Peter Garrett is campaigning???

Peter Garrett is selling out.

He has always been an advocate of the greens... I really dont apporve of the labour party... they are rather incompetent... I agree with some of Peter Garretts arguments, but for him to join the labour party is somewhat of a shock for me... unless he is planning on changing them from the inside... in that case, i wish him the best of luck!!!

i don't think someone running for labor is selling out the greens.... it would be a different story if he was running for liberal!

Mugz -- **A former president of the Australian Conservation Foundation, Mr Garrett has been criticised by fellow environmentalists for "selling out" to a major party.
"Politics is an imperfect game but it's the only game we've got," Mr Garrett said.
"I didn't take the offer lightly. I've given the offer a lot of thought and it's a serious decision that I've made."**

He said this morning that he could have ran with the Greens but he feels he'll make more of a difference this way - plus it's a safe Labour seat. (Which means little Indooroopilly was a safe Labour seat too and Alan Pidgeon almost won before he conceded)

if it promotes controversy i think all the better. it makes people think about stuff and question things and that's a good thing
