I come from the land down under
Published on August 25, 2004 By trina_p In Cooking
I love my husband -- He is my favourite grown up person on this planet but it FLAWS me that he hates!! vegemite.

How can any redblooded Australian hate vegemite?!?!?!?

Aren't vegemite sandwiches the main staple of any Australian kids diet - didn't we all take vegemite sandwiches for lunch at school.

it's amazing -- Vegemite puts a rose in every cheek - The vitamin B in Vegemite helps kids grow up stronger. It wakes you up - makes you feel great - wash it down with a glass of milo (more milo then milk!)

Put it on Vita-wheats - make worms!!

Add some red frogs -- mmmmm Vegemite and Red frog sandwiches :- see this Link

It's completely unAustralian to NOT LOVE!!!!!!!! vegemite. Remember the song?!?!!? Do you come from the land down under?

Now people are allowed to differ on the amount of vegemite - I personally like a little spread evenly with lots of butter but I have a friend who has no butter and the vegemite is almost as thick as the bread it's spread over.
But you can't be Australian and HATE vegemite -- that's like ...wrong!!

MMM Vegemite sandwiches - think I'll go make me another one.

(in honour of vegemite I've left this blog black)

Quoting Men at Work earns you an automatic insightful.

No fair quoting them just to get the bloody points, though!

Actually I wasn't - I lost what I was going to say half way through -- It was supposed to be more then just a rant about people not liking Vegemite - more of an ode to Australianism -- but I got lost - as I tend to do -- perhaps I will edit it one day

Or someone else with better prose can rewrite it

Ok... I have to ask

What the hay is Vegimite or milo?
on Aug 25, 2004
OH Joey you're breaking my heart

Okay Vegemite is a black sticky jar of yeast extracted spread (the UK has Marmite and Promite - no substitute) -- if you went inot any Australian speciality shop you'd get some.

Please say you remember the Men at Work song - Down Under (what Gideon was referring to ie the title of this blog)

Milo - is a malt drink - produced by nestle - other staple of every Aussie kids diet -- tastes FANTASTIC sprinkled over ice-cream -- these days you can get milo ice-cream, milo biscuits (cookies) and milo chocolate bars
Basically it's a choclatety malt powder that you stir into milk but its chunkier then ovaltine and it sits on top of the milk so you eat it with a spoon -- the link I put in my article talks in depth about milo as well as other Aussie food - like tim tams.

Better yet - Janders just pop on a plane - bring your hubby and come down under - Between Muggaz Mig and I we'll have you sorted out in no time!!!
(*note to Muggaz - and you said I didn't have to Americanise everything)

thanks for the clarification.

I will have to check out the ingredients on the vegimite next time I am at byerly's (a specialty grocer), to see if I can try eat.

Sad to say I wont be trying milo anytime soon, malt is on my list of foods I cant eat. So have a extra glass for me!

If I am ever down under, you can fill me (the silly American) in on everything to eat!

Trina~ I do remember the Men at work song, I am a true child of the 80's!

Joey!!

I think I've misinformed you - I'm such a ditz

You can get malted Milo - but it's not actually a malt drink -- but I have no idea what it really is - malt was the best I could come up with -- help me out here Aussies
But I think it may contain a malt extract - so you're probably better off not eating it - just in case
I don't have a tin to look at (we ran out of milo months ago and never replaced it -- we're coffee drinkers)

As for Vegemite
Yeast extract, salt, mineral salt (508), malt extract (from barley) natural colour(150d) Contains preservative 220 Vegetable extract, niacin, thiamine, riboflaven, folate
*suitable for vegetarians*

I had never heard of vegemite, but I am intrigued now . . . mmmm . . . black, gooey, non-meat substance . . .

Cute post, trina!

Mason - I shake my head at you Americans are convertable too.

I shake my head at YOU Texas! You haven't even heard the Men at Work song? -- it was part of the 1980's quiz we all took a few days ago

Black gooey non meat made from beer and quite salty -- MMMMM - is good for mouth ulcers/colesores too.

Well I charge all you non alergic people to find and eat some vegemite in the next week!! I recommend a small amount on bread (with or without butter) to start with and then add more according to preference. And report back with your opinions

Seriously - you hate vegemite - WHY?!?!?!?!

Ummm... if it quacks like a duck...

It smells like shit, it looks like shit, it tastes like shit... therefore it must be shit! (unless it is a REALLY thin spread with HEAPS of butter on Toast... not Bread!).

Ever had Marmite?
on Aug 26, 2004
oohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh vegemite on toast with butter -- not margarine -- and a glass of milo where you make sure the milo stays at the bottom, drink all the milk except for a little tiny bit that you mix into the milo and make into a feral looking paste that tastes diviiiiiine.

i've loved milo for as long as i can remember -- when i was a little kid and i asked my mum about drug addiction she explained it to me that it: "you know how you really like milo? well it's like loving milo a LOT" which of course made perfect sense to 5 year old me. go mum and the nestle company.

vegemite is certainly an acquired taste. i used to only like it very thinly spread on toast but i've built up a tolerance to it and am now able to enjoy vegemite sandwiches and the spread amply applied to toast. it's also good instead of using beef stock (one teaspoon of vegemite in a cup of hot water) and my friend lisa spreads it on lamb chops before cooking them.

a veritable myriad of uses! thanks for a cool blog bina, and tell nick he should reassess his alliegance to australia. maybe he should compensate for not eating vegemite by eating extra jaffas, timtams, milo and hamburgers with beetroot on them?
